Idlis or Steamed Rice Cakes


What are Idlis? 

Idlis or steamed rice cakes have been well known in India for many centuries for their nutritional profile and health benefits. 

What do you need to make Idlis? 

In addition to the phenomenal batters from New Origin Foods, you will need idli steamer - check out the Kitchen Essentials section for Idli maker options. The steamers come with plates on a spindle that sits in the steamer. Each of the plates will have 4 concave templates that batter will need to be added to prior to steaming. 

How do you make Idlis? 

Making idlis is a very simple 4-step, 15-20 minute process. First, add a little bit of water to the steamer. Second, grease the templates with a little bit of oil and add a couple of table spoons of batter to as many templates as you would like. Third, place the templates on its spindle and load it into the steamer. Let it steam for 15 minutes and Finally, take the templates out of the steamer and let those cool down for a minute or two before scooping out the idlis for serving hot, nutritious meals!  

Dosas or Crêpes


What are Dosas? 

Dosas are thin layers of batter lightly roasted on a pan. They are similar to Crêpes and have been in use in India and other parts of the world for many centuries. 

What do you need to make Dosas or Crêpes? 

In addition to the phenomenal batters from New Origin Foods, you will need a dosa making pan or a crêpe maker - check out the Kitchen Essentials section for equipment options. 

How do you make Dosas? 

Take a couple of scoops of batter into a bowl and add a few drops of water to thin the batter a bit. Add a bit of oil to a pan and spread it around. Drop the watered down batter into the middle of pan and spread around the pan in concentric circular motion spreading outward. Let is roast for a couple of minutes on medium heat and enjoy a delicious meal. 

Waffles


What are Waffles? 

Well... who doesn't know about waffles :-) However, according to wikipedia, a waffle is a dish made from leavened batter that is cooked between two plates that are patterned to give a characteristic size, shape and surface impression. 

What do you need to make Waffles? 

There are different types of waffle makers available. The ones that we would recommend are Norwegian style that are not as deep as the typical Belgian waffle makers. Also try different patterns. Kids love those different shapes. 

How do you make Waffles? 

Add a couple of scoops of batter at the center of the waffle iron and close the lid. Set the crisp factor to the desired level on the waffle maker and wait for it to beep to begin enjoying a great snack that is much better than the typical options available in the market today because of the plant-based protein from the lentils in the batter!

Pancakes / Uthappams


What are Uthappams? 

Pancakes made with the leavened batter are also known as Uthappams in some other parts of the world. Just as pancakes are dressed with maple syrup and fruits, Uthappams can be embellished with a wide range of vegetable toppings such as green chillies, onions, cilantro, and carrots. 

What do you need to make Pancakes / Uthappams?

How do you make Pancakes / Uthappams? 

Add a couple of scoops of batter at the center of the pan and spread out a bit. These are typically thicker than Dosas or Crepes. Add toppings to taste!
